Is Money Message a scam?
No, Money Message is not a scam. It is a Nedbank product, and Nedbank is a licensed financial services provider.

What is Money Message and how do I use it?
Money Message is a secure platform, by Nedbank, that lets you make payments and get paid through WhatsApp. To get paid you will have to follow our guidance in a chat to create and send bills (with your business details) to customers.

How do I register for Money Message?
Simply save the Money Message number +27 (0)87 240 6272 as a contact on your cellphone and start a chat in WhatsApp by sending 'Hi'.

Do I need a smartphone to use Money Message?
Because Money Message works in WhatsApp, you'll need a cellphone that can download it. You'll also need data and an internet connection. Fortunately, transactions through Money Message are light on data, as there are no videos or audio files for you to download. Please check with your network provider for options to use WhatsApp with reduced data costs.

Why do I need to upload a photo of my ID or passport?
To help prevent identity theft we need to verify the person registering for Money Message. It's part of our compliance with financial regulations in South Africa to match your ID or passport photo with your selfie.

Does my business need to be registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) to use Money Message to get payments?
Your small informal business does not have to be registered with the CIPC as a private company (Pty) Ltd, a sole proprietor or as a non-profit company (NPC).

Do I need to have a business bank account to receive money through Money Message?
Your business does not have to be a registered business or have a business account to get payments through Money Message. Any personal or savings account can be linked to your Money Message profile.

Do I need to be registered for VAT to use Money Message?
Money Message is perfect for small informal businesses and you don't have to be a registered business or VAT-registered to use Money Message.

Is there a Money Message app I can download?
No, Money Message works in WhatsApp only, so you'll only need to download WhatsApp on your cellphone and save the Money Message number, +27 (0)87 240 6272, to your contacts.

What phone and operating system do I need to use Money Message?
You’ll need a smartphone with an up-to-date operating system and the latest version of WhatsApp. If your phone is too old for the latest WhatsApp version, you’ll run into trouble using Money Message.

What is the maximum amount that can be transacted in a day?
There’s no daily maximum amount, but bills are restricted to a maximum amount of R4 000 each and a total of R50 000 per month.

What file format does my logo need to be?
You’ll be able to upload your logo as PNG, JPEG or PDF. The file needs to be under 2 MB and preferably in the shape of a square.

Why does my photo show an upload error?
Please check that you’re taking a photo with your cellphone in real time. It won’t work if you’re uploading a photo from somewhere else or if you take a photo of a photo. You will need to show a thumbs up close to your face as proof that it’s a ‘live’ photo. We recommend taking it against a light-coloured wall and in good but not extreme lighting. The lens of your cellphone camera also needs to be clean so the photo isn’t blurry.

Is there a limit to the amount my business can bill through Money Message?
Bills are restricted to a maximum amount of R4 000 each and a total of R50 000 per month.

How many bank accounts can I link to receive payments?
You can link only one bank account at a time to receive payments. It can be a business or personal account from any South African bank.

Why isn't my money reflecting in my account yet?
Payments may take one to four business days to reflect in your account, depending on your bank. You may expect delays on public holidays and weekends. Check that the correct bank details are saved on your Money Message business profile. For help with changing your details, reply with 'i' in the chat to request agent support.

How much does it cost to send a bill?
It costs R2 to create a bill and we charge 2,75% on the merchant service commission fee. Fees are deducted before payments are made to a merchant’s linked account.

How much does a card transaction cost for the merchant?
The merchant service commission fee is 2,75%. Fees are deducted before payments are made to a merchant’s linked account.

How can I get paid with Money Message?
You can create and send a bill with your business details to your customer. Choose ‘Gp’ (get paid) from the main menu and follow the easy instructions.

How much does it cost to use Money Message to make payments?
There is no cost to pay an invoice.

Why can't my card be linked to my Money Message profile?
Check that your card is activated for online payments with the respective bank. Currently we accept cards that are issued by South African banks only.

How many cards can I link to my Money Message profile?
You can load as many cards as you'd like and delete expired cards or cards you no longer want to use. Name your cards to ensure you use the correct cards for payments.

What kind of cards can be linked to Money Message?
You can add any South African Visa or Mastercard card to make a payment with Money Message. American Express, Diners Club and international cards are currently not accepted to make payments.

What is Masterpass?
Masterpass by Mastercard makes online payments safer by storing all payment information in one highly secure place. It helps you pay faster online when your card details are saved, so Money Message chooses Masterpass for your convenience and security.

Do I need to have a Nedbank bank account to use Money Message?
You can add any South African bank account to receive payments and any South African Visa or Mastercard card to pay with Money Message.

Do I need to be a South African citizen to use Money Message?
Money Message can be accessed by anyone with a valid South African identity document or card and a South African bank account; or by foreign citizens with a valid passport and a South African bank account and card.

Can I use Money Message without a connection to the internet?

What is the monthly subscription fee for Money Message?
Money Message isn't a subscription service and you can stop using it whenever you want to by simply replying with 'Da' in the chat. You'll be guided on how to delete your Money Message account.

How do I unsubscribe?
You won't be charged anything if you stop using Money Message and simply keep it on your cellphone in case you need it in future.

I started a transaction but didn't complete it. Now what?
If you want to cancel a transaction, reply with ‘C’ to cancel in the chat. If you want to edit any information on a transaction, reply with ‘E’ to edit. You can also send ‘Hi’ to start a chat and ‘M’ to go to the main menu.

Can a merchant have more than one account with Money Message?
A merchant can have only one account associated with their ID or passport number, as they will need to go through a light Know-your-customer (KYC) process to be able to register and use Money Message to get payments.

Why can't I delete my cellphone number?
Money Message uses your cellphone number as your unique account number in the same way WhatsApp does. If you want to change your cellphone number, reply with ‘' to request agent support.
